Grenadier Abteilung 1942 (Infantry Regiment)

1941 saw the Heer pitted against tougher and more numerous opposition. Many new weapons were still far away from completion however, and so only trivial upgrades followed. The huge surplus of captured Soviet semi-automatic rifles was distributed amongst the infantry formations to improve their firepower. Thus although the infantry now had a huge array of rifles, this was seen as an effective stopgap measure until the prototype assault rifles prove their worth. The marginally effective light 50mm leGr 36 mortar was withdrawn and replaced by the much more effecive and deadly, modern 8cm k GrW 42 mortar. These were to prove disastrously deadly to the allied infantry units. And the very first of the many to follow light anti-tank rockets, the light Faustpatrone entered service. This was distributed amongst the sturmpioneer and line grenadier formations to provide very effective, short range anti-tank weapon, which will haunt the allies for the next years to come. And as the average 5cm anti-tank gun was becoming obsolete in the face of the T-34, the 7.5cm Pak40 as well as huge numbers of captured 76mm Soviet field guns were rushed to supplement the anti-tank capability of these units.
