SOMUA S-35 Medium Tank

S-35, SaU-40, SaU-40 DP, Pzkpfw 35C 739(f), Pzkpfw SaU40 740 (f)
The SOMUA S-35 was in 1940, the best medium tank in the world. Designed in 1935 as the standard cavalry tank of the French armored forces, it it was a successful and modern design, combining features such as a cast steel turret and hull, high mobility, sloped armor and powerful main gun in a sleek frame. However it was plagued by a small one man turret which overburdened the commander greatly and the lack of radio's which limited command and control to a very basic level. However, over 500 were in french hands at the time of the invasion, and showed a good account of themselves in the battles to follow. Over 200 were given to the Italian army and the rest were used by occupational forces until 1943 when they were drafted into Volksgrenadier units as a light tank. The S-35 production line was destroyed by retreating units and no additional vehicles were produced. However in late 1939 an assault gun variant of the tank named the SaU-40 entered limited scale production. It featured a high powered APX 75mm gun mounted in the hull front, a the cost of ammunition and armor. As well as the assault gun, a heavy infantry fighting vehicle was designed to arm the elite shock regiments of the Mechanized Dragon Portes infantry. Only about 100 of each were produced and proved very effective in combat, that when the Renault production line was seized by Fallchirmjager, the line was quickly modernized and the first new Pzkpfw SaU40 740(f) heavy assault infantry tanks were rushed to the elite SS Panzergrenadier infantry in time for operation Barbarossa.
