Char AMX-42B "Grognard" Super Heavy Tank

Arguably the best tank of French Army, the AMX-42 was of the heaviest allied tank outside the Soviet superheavy tank designs. As there was much space available for modernization, firepower improvements in the face of increasing German technical ingenuity were created resulting in the AMX-42B (pic GK: African Theater pg27). Upgrading the lacking 47mm cannon with the modern APX 75mm added to the foreward punch, as well as two additional MG turrets on the side of the front hull improved area defensive capabilities. Only about a third of all AMX-42s were upgraded to the design and all the tanks at the time in Africa remanied the original design through the war. Germans using their airborne raids, managed to capture masses of French industry easily and the Grognard production line too fell into their hands. Lacking serious heavy tank punch themselves and fearfull of the masses of ultraheavy tanks facing them on the Russian side, they introduced an improved design into their ranks. Mounting a powerfull Pak41 cannon in the main hull, it retained the AFE Tesla gun, but it was found to be lacking in range and giving too much problems, it was dropped in 1942 and replaced with the ultraheavy 12.8cm Flak 40 anti-aircraft cannon. These performed very well against the storming mass of ultraheavy Russian armor. The factory itself was moved in 1943 closer to the German national border as to protect it from Allied bombing waves, and was turning out these behemoths for Volkspanzer battalions well after Tiger and Maus tanks replaced it in the main german armor formations.
